It is with heavy hearts that we bring the news that Suvash Darnal, a key leader in the Dalit movement, has passed away in a traffic accident in the United States.

The Dalit community in Nepal, and those in solidarity across the globe, are deeply mourning the loss of a highly skilled, talented, and instrumental leader in the fight against caste discrimination.

“The Dalit movement has lost one of its brightest young intellectuals. Suvash inspired everyone and had contributed so much to the movement, not least as a co-founder of Jagaran Media Center and founder and executive director of the Samata Foundation. We will miss him dearly,” says IDSN Coordinator Rikke Nöhrlind, who has had the honour of working with Suvash over the years.

Suvash was a truly positive, inspirational and insightful catalyst of change. While his body may have passed, his spirit will always be present as the Dalit movement press on with their work to draw Dalit voices and concerns in at both political, social and cultural levels.

Words cannot describe the loss that has been suffered by Suvash’s family and friends and our heartfelt condolences go out to them at this incredibly difficult time.
