IDSN is delighted to welcome two UN Special Rapporteurs, Ashwini K.P. and Prof. Nicolas Levrat, alongside a powerful panel of Dalit human rights defenders from across South Asia, for a UN Human Rights Council side-event in Geneva on caste, gender, power and justice.
Caste, Gender and Power: #DalitVoicesForJustice will take place on 2 July at 14:00 CET in Room XI, Palais des Nations, Geneva. The event will be held in person only.
Bringing together young #DalitVoicesForJustice, human rights experts, civil society and Member States, the event will highlight the urgent need to explicitly address caste and gender discrimination as a root cause of widespread human rights violations. Panellists from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Pakistan will share their experiences and put forward concrete recommendations for sustainable change.
IDSN is honoured to be joined by:
- Ashwini K.P., UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance
- Prof. Nicolas Levrat, UN Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues
- Savita Ali, Eva Foundation, India
- Dharsika Sivapragasam, Human Development Organisation, Sri Lanka
- Pooja Malhi, Pakistan Dalit Solidarity Network, Pakistan
- Raj BK, Jagaran Media Centre, Nepal
The event will be moderated by Meena Varma, International Dalit Solidarity Network.
The discussion will provide a platform for Dalit human rights defenders to speak directly to the realities of caste and gender discrimination across South Asia, including how intersecting forms of exclusion affect access to rights, justice, safety and participation. It will also offer an opportunity for Member States, UN experts and civil society to engage with recommendations grounded in lived experience and human rights practice.
If you are in Geneva for the Human Rights Council, please join us in Room XI for this important conversation on caste, gender, power and justice.
IDSN thanks its valued co-sponsors: Human Rights Watch, Minority Rights Group, International Service for Human Rights, the International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism, the Lutheran World Federation, the World Council of Churches and Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development.
