Nepalma Varna Vyavashtaa  -  A comprehensive book on the Dalit movement in Nepal. By Ra Varga Sangharsha Aahutii - a dalit leader and CA member. Published by the Samata Foundation april 2011. The book is in Nepali. Read an english review of the book here >> (April 2011)

Towards Dignity, Citizenship and Justice’ The books authors have sought to understand what caste discrimination looks like, its historical legacy of keeping many millions of Nepal’s citizens unable to read and to properly feed their families, and how Dalits, in spite of these violations of human rights, seek ways to protect themselves and to live with dignity in an otherwise intolerable social order (November 2010)

A Cry for Dignity This book by Professor Mary C. Grey tackles the subject of caste-based violence by focusing on the position of Dalit women in India, who suffer from the triple oppressions of poverty, being female and being female Dalits. Mary C. Grey is a patron of the Dalit Solidarity Network UK  (October 2010)

Two books pay tribute to Dr Sono Khangharani: The two books have been published to highlight the contribution to social development and poverty alleviation by Dr Sono Khangharani. The books' titles: The Voice of the Desert and A Ray of Hope (July 2010)

Plural Narratives from Narmada Valley - Delhi Solidarity Group. Tehelka wrote "A fine read that shows how movements work in India. It is an attempt at writing a subaltern history of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) movement that mobilised people against the Sardar Sarover Project and is a compilation of 14 interviews."

A groundbreaking exhibition exploring the lives of Dalits in India was on show at London’s Hope Gallery from 18-23 October. Organised by photographer Marcus Perkins and the charity Christian Solidarity Worldwide, 'Being Untouchable' featured a number of intimate, yet powerful images of Dalits in every day situations. The organisation Bangladesh Dalit Human Rights and the British NGO One World Action have launched a landmark online photo exhibition on YouTube. ‘Defiant Voices’ illustrates the daily lives of Dalit communities in Dhaka, Bangladesh (January 2010)

Documentaries:

Sex, Death & The Gods BBC Documentary about the Devadasi tradition of temple prostirtution in India. The Documentary is directed by Beeban Kidron (2011)

Born Polluted Documentary film exploring the harsh daily reality of the Nepalese caste system. Directed by Heidi Lipsanen/Moscas Productions

‘The Death of Merit’ is based on testimonies and is a result of efforts to bring out the truth behind the caste oppression suffered by Dalit and Adivasi students in higher education and the resulting suicides of our bright students like Balmukund Bharti. 'The Death of Merit' - Part I & 'The Death of Merit'- Part II´  (April 2011)

Prostitutes of God This documentary by UK journalist Sarah Harris depicts the lives of Devadasi prostitutes. The Devadasi tradition of ’sacred prostitution’ leads to systematic sexual exploitation of young girls from Dalit and other marginalised communities. The film ’Prostitutes of God’ has been criticised by Indian and international NGOs, who claim that it mocks and belittles sex workers (October 2010)

'Hidden Apartheid' The documentary by the Indian-New Zealand filmmaker, Mandrika Rupa, examines the caste-based inequities which exist in India as well as Indian immigrant communities in the West (July 2010)

'India's Forgotten Women': This British documentary on the exploitation and oppression faced by Dalit women in India premiered at a special screening in London on 1 July. Directed by Michael Lawson, the film ‘India’s Forgotten Women’ uncovers evidence of violence, rape, trafficking, bonded labour and other atrocities. (July 2010)

Pink Saris: This documentary by British filmmaker Kim Longinotto takes a swipe at the Indian caste system by depicting ’The Gulabi Gang’, a growing group of mostly younger Dalit women fighting for their rights in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Dressed in pink saris and led by the formidable Sampat Pal, they struggle against domestic violence, rape and child marriages. The film has been screened at several film festivals including CPH:DOX in Denmark (October 2010)

Soap opera on caste discrimination in Nepal is proving a big success The soap opera, which portrays the trials and tribulations of a Dalit family in Nepal, pivoting around the story of a difficult inter-caste romance, has been a big success in the country (July 2009)
