Human Rights Watch Report: India’s marginalized denied education Dalits, Adivasis and Muslims are most at risk of dropping out of school and being denied an education in India – states the comprehensive report, “They say we’re dirty” – Denying an Education to India’s Marginalised, just released by Human Rights Watch.
A project to map Al Akhdam communities in Yemen has been launched by UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MoSAL). IDSN has been working to promote the rights of Al Akhdam people for a number years and welcomes this much needed survey, expected to reach some 10,000 households.
Two reports published in the UK confirm that caste discrimination “cannot be tolerated and should be included in the protections against discrimination and harassment provided in the Equality Act 2010” and comment that the proposed sunset clause, “for a non-discrimination ground is legally without precedent and goes against this key differential”
For hundreds of years, a group of people living mostly along Yemen’s coastal areas have been regarded as lower than dogs. Reporter Amanda Fisher and photographer Leslie Pableo visit the communities of Akhdam to find out whether government assurances of equality are more than just lip service.
IDSN and All Youth Network for Society Development submitted a report on the human rights situation of Al-Akhdam in Yemen prior to the Universal Periodic Review of Yemen on January 29th. Unfortunately no direct references to Al Akhdam or caste were made in the review. An event to highlight the plight of the Al Akhdam was held in Brussels on February 13th.
The manual produced by National Dalit Watch is a pioneering tool to help those delivering aid in post disaster situations counter caste-based discrimination in aid delivery efforts.

UNICEF: Dalit girls most excluded from primary education in India A report just released by UNICEF and UNESCO, on out of school children in India, highlights that Dalit girls have the highest primary school exclusion rate in India. The report also finds that half of the pre-school age Dalit children are not attending school.
Kara's pioneering analysis encompasses human trafficking, child labor, and global security, and he concludes with ten specific initiatives to eliminate the system of bonded labor from South Asia once and for all.
