UN and discrimination against Dalits in Nepal

UNIVERSAL PERIODIC REVIEW

Nepal will be reviewed by the UPR working group at the 10th UPR session in 2011. The deadline for the submission of NGO contributions to the review of Nepal has not yet been announced by the OHCHR, but will most likely be 6-12 months ahead of the review.


UN TREATY BODIES

The issue of caste discrimination in Nepal has been addressed by several UN treaty bodies, including the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the Committee against Torture, and the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

UN SPECIAL PROCEDURES

Requests for visits to Nepal by UN Special Rapporteurs

The following Special Rapporteurs have requested a country visit to Nepal, but so far with no reply from the Government of Nepal:

  • (R in 2004) SR on summary executions
  • (R) SRSG on the situation of human rights defenders
  • (R in 2006) (Reminder in 2008) SR on racism
  • (R in 2006 and 2008 for follow-up visit) WG on enforced and involuntary disappearances
  • (R in 2003) by SR on the right to freedom of opinion and expression
  • (R in Nov. 2006) joint mission by IE on minority issues and SR on Indigenous Peoples
  • (R in 2008) SR on the right to food
  • (R in 2008) SR on human rights defenders
